Atkinson Firefighters. & Lions Club Car Show

September 5, 2011 — Up until Friday, the forecast had been for showers and thunderstorms Saturday, the day of Atkinson's annual Labor Day car show, sponsored by the Firefighters Association and Lions Club, held on the property of the fire department and Atkinson Historical Society in Atkinson, New Hampshire. But on Friday, the forecast changed to rain-free most of the day Saturday with showers not beginning until evening. So I thought it looked good for the show. But when I got up Saturday morning and turned on NHPR radio, their weather report said it was already raining in parts of southern New Hampshire and there would be rounds of thunderstorms in both the morning and afternoon. It wasn't raining where I live, but the sky was dark and ominous. So I was resigned to spending the day at home.

At about 10 a.m. as I was reading the morning paper, the sun broke through. So I decided where it was only a 40-minute drive to Atkinson, there wasn't much to lose if I headed down there and got turned around by bad weather. So I grabbed my camera and set out for Atkinson. By the time I got there, the sky was mostly clear, it was warm and humid, more like July than September, and the area was filled with cars and spectators.

So I had a good day after all. I overheard someone say there were about 100 fewer cars than last year, but there was still a good selection. There were a dozen or more beautifully restored Model A Fords and many other interesting vehicles. My personal favorite was a 1927 unrestored Chrysler that drove in belching steam from its radiator. The owner seemed unconcerned and walked away and left the car which was quickly surrounded by admirers.

I got over 50 photos and a short video of the '27 Chrysler which you'll find at this link:
