October 5-8, 2011 — I didn't decide until three days before the start of the event whether to go to the American Automobile Club of America's fall meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This event is one of the largest car show, car corral and flea market gatherings in the world. It's mecca for antique car enthusiasts.
I started contacting motels and inns in the Hershey area, but found them all full. I was about to give up when the last one I called, a TraveLodge five miles from the AACA event, had vacancies. I made a reservation and left at 6 a.m. October 5 on what would be a four-day stretch of the most beautiful Indian Summer weather in years. I arrived at the show grounds, adjacent to Hershey Park, at 3 p.m. and spent a couple of hours exploring the vast flea market area and car corral before checking in at my motel and going for supper.
The next three days I must have walked 40 miles covering the acres of flea markets and especially the car corral. These cars are all for sale and there must have been 1,000 of them. It was a car show in itself. I visited the AACA's nearby auto museum one morning. Saturday, my final day, the privately owned show cars arrived and were parked in a huge field. There must have been another 1,000 of these cars. A huge crowd of spectators made photography difficult. I missed many photos because I just couldn't get a clear shot through the mob surrounding the cars.
It was an exhausting three days, but worth it. Every serious antique car enthusiast has to go to Hershey at least once. I divided my photos and videos into five separate series. At the end of each series are links to the other pages. You may start with this one:
