November 15, 2011 — I finally finished transferring my files and installing all my software today on the new HP TouchSmart PC I brought home Saturday. My home network made the task of transferring files from the old to the new PC fairly easy, although time-consuming. I have over 200 gigabytes of files. I transferred my largest folders, containing all my photos and videos, from my external backup drive. All software installed without incident, except for Quicken. I had an "unlock number" for the version of Quicken I had, but it wouldn't accept it when I attempted to install it on the new PC. It just happened I had received an offer from Quicken for their latest upgrade about a week ago, so rather than fight what would probably have been a losing battle to get the old version working, I spent the $49 and downloaded the new version which installed OK.
My old PC, a Dell XVI purchased in 2007, was running out of disk space. Not only that, but I had gotten the blue screen of death twice recently. I was able to recover both times, but I was afraid it was only a matter of time before it failed completely. The new HP has a 23" monitor as opposed to 20" on the old one, a 1-terabyte hard drive, 4 GB RAM, and s 64-bit CORE i3 processor. It has a touch screen which I probably won't use. I find the mouse much more effective. It has built-in speakers, but I connected my old Altech-Lansing external speakers and subwoofer which have superior sound quality.
